Wozu

-Inner struggle

“Wozu” is a german word which means “what for”

As seen in the Plato’s allegory of the cave, all of us are constantly caught between fictions and realities, battling on the thin line between pleasure and pain.

“Wozu” is a series that show the states of inner collision among scared egos –individuals that want to look away from the truth and who, despite the clamor of voices around them, remain largely silent.

In an endless circle of life and death—born in and cross the water to breathe his last breath—humans have been searching for the reasons for the existence and resisted the world and self-made limitations.

The water in this project represents a death of the physical body, and at the same time, of the soul driven to despair.

The peaceful but violent attribute of water is very similar with that of human being, I articulate the collision between egos through the mix of water and human body.

Humans are often depicted as fruits fallen off the trees in the Norse mythology.

Likewise, the story of Babel tower, in which the tower is reminiscent of a tall tree, seems to describe a human challenge against God as well as a desperate struggle to climb the tower to find the origin.

We, the defective human beings, live by floating the world of chaos.

The incessant questions derived from chaos might be the reason or signification of our existence.

Project “Wozu” originated in the bizarre and mystic image of myself reflected in the water.

These sentences written right after sudden awaken from sleep, opened the starting point of my work.

I reflected myself in water, and there was a stranger.

I wish he disappeared tomorrow.

Sense Of Guilt

-Brutality of human nature depicted as distorted love of bobby and ken.

There have been numerous controversies on Barbie doll owing to its inborn duplicity and abnormal figure. Despite these critics, Barbie doll is still an idol for many children and women.

Besides it’s been a long time to appear black Barbie dolls by a lot of disputes and there is discrimination between white and black Barbie dolls like the real world.

People’s dual aspect and mentality towards Barbie doll became the motive of choosing Barbie doll as a main material for my work.

Those like the fleeting moment before a traffic accident, murder, or voyeurism actually do exist, but to the most people who are lucky enough not to experience any of these, they are just some other people’s business.

Depending on the viewer’s subconsciousness and experience, a piece of photo can evoke completely different kinds of inspirations.

I made the new familiar time and space that looks like a real world where Barbie dolls actually live.

I express brutality of human nature with distorted love of bobby and ken.

Fighting Bulls

These bulls were raised for fighting bulls.

In spite of the fierce battle, they became gentle again as if they had forgotten everything,

and the appearance of the bull fighting again as if nothing had happened seems to be close to the animal's instincts,

it is reminiscent of our human being who lives warlike life everyday.

Today we are fighting for survival in a thrown society.

Float

-A Spirit Who Sees the Present as Past

I lost my way. I had a strong sense of déjà vu as I entered some place

I began this project to address the questions a spirit from the past would have regarding the present.

Traditionally, photographers employ backgrounds and subjects and transfer their personal sensibilities in the subjects through their medium to express their thoughts.

However, this series is a practice in roleplaying where the artist captures the perspective of a spirit from the past wandering through the present day. 

Viewing the present through the eyes of a late soul, we can surmise that there will be considerable differences in perspectives of current circumstances.

By showing the perspectives of a spirit from the past, far removed from the present, I want to raise the question on whether man can exist without a physical body.

Sacrifice

The individual desire is sacrificed to obtain the public virtue, our reality and every-day life is dominated for the sake of the common good.

The human pleasure is sacrificed for social productivity, and the desire at the present is given up for the vague stability of future.

We are even required to abandon the longing for freedom, for economic growth and development of civilization

The ethics based on the moral virtue and economic utility does not admit any other desire, particularly the desire of the minority.

It just enforce the submission to the order of the rule in the name of morale and use like a sacrificial offering,

the animals in the photos represent the humans who sacrifice themselves in sake of civilization.

Although the figures and landscapes I see would be no more different from those others see, I will expose the depth of their lives,

by boosting myself into the supernatural state through communication and interaction with them. 

Wozu

-내적 몸부림

“Wozu”는 독일어로 “무엇때문에” 라는 뜻이다.

플라톤의 우화처럼 우리들은 서로 맞닿아있는 고통과 쾌락의 경계에서 또 다른 자아와 끊임없이 투쟁한다.

Wozu” 시리즈는 두려워 외면하고 싶었던 수많은 다른 자아들이 조용히 그 안에서 다른 목소리를 내며 무수히 충돌하고 있는 상황을 보여주고 있다.

인간은 물에서 태어나 물을 건너 저 세상으로 떠나는 생성과 소멸의 반복속에서, 자신을 가로막는 세상과 스스로 만들어낸 벽에 굴하지 않고 끊임없이 존재의 이유를 찾아왔다.

작품 속의 물은 육체의 죽음 그리고 절망 끝에 이르게 되는 정신의 죽음을 상징한다.

평온하지만 폭력적인 물의 속성은 다분히 다중적인 인간의 모습과 닮아있는데. 나는 또 다른 자아들의 충돌을 물과 인체의 혼성으로 원초적으로 표현하고 있다.

북구 신화에서 인간은 나무에서 떨어진 열매로 묘사되기도 한다. 이처럼 큰 나무를 연상시키는 바벨탑은 신에 대한 인간의 도전이면서 동시에 자신의 근원을 찾아 탑에 오르는 인간의 몸부림을 보여주는 상징이 아닐까?

불완전한 우리들은 혼돈의 세상을 부유하며 살아간다. 혼돈 속에서 갖게되는 끊임없는 질문들은 어쩌면 우리가 살아가는 이유이자 의미가 될지도 모른다.

“Wozu” 시리즈는 물에 비치는 나 자신의 기괴하고 신비로운 느낌에서 시작되었다.

문득 잠에서 깨어 쓴 이 문장은 이번 작업의 시발점이 되었다.

물 속의 내 모습을 비춰보았다.

거기에는 다른 사람이 자리하고 있었다.

내일은 그가 사라지기를 바란다

Sense Of Guilt

-바비와 켄의 어긋난 사랑으로 표현된 인간의 잔혹한 본성

바비인형은 태생적인 이중성과 비정상적인 몸매로 인해 다양한 사회문제들을 야기해왔다.

수많은 논란에도 불구하고 여전히 많은 아이들과 여성들의 워너비 모델로 존재한다.

또한 흑인 바비인형이 탄생하기까지는 많은 논란과 시간이 소요되었고 현재도 마치 인간세상에서처럼 차별이 존재한다. 바비인형에 대한 사람들의 이중적인 시선과 심리가 작업의 주요소재로 바비인형을 선택하게 된 동기이다. 

표면적으로 일련의 작업에서 보이는 교통사고 직전의 상황이나 살인, 관음증 등은 현실에서는 엄연히 존재하는 일들이지만 그런 일들을 겪어보지 못한 사람들에게는 남의 일처럼만 느껴지는 사건들이다.

이는 보는 이들의 무의식, 경험에 따라 같은 사진이라도 완전히 다른 감흥을 불러일으킬 수 있다는 것이다.

나는 마치 바비인형이 실제로 살고 있는 듯한 친근하고, 낯선 시공간을 만들었다. 이 곳에서 나는 인간의 잔혹한 본성을 바비와 켄의 어긋난 사랑으로 표현하고 있다.

Fighting Bulls

이 소들은 싸움소로 길러졌다.

처절한 싸움 뒤 모든 것을 잊은 듯 다시 온순해지고, 얼마뒤 아무 일도 없었다는 듯이 다시  싸움에 나서는 소들의  모습은 동물의 본능에 가까워 보이지만,

매일 매일 전쟁같은 삶을 살아가는 우리 인간들의 모습을 연상시킨다.

오늘도 우리는 던져진 사회 속에서 생존을 위해 싸우고 있다.

Float

-현재를 과거처럼 보고 있는 영혼

나는 길을 잃었다. 멈춰선 어느 곳에서  데쟈뷰를 느꼈다.

과거에 죽은 영혼이 바라보는 현재에 대한 궁금증에서 시작한 이 작업은 기존의 사진들이 찍고자 하는 대상과 배경을 이용하거나 사진을 찍는 대상에 작가의 감정을 이입하여 작품을 표현해 왔다면

이번 시리즈는 사진을 찍는 작가에게 과거를 품고 현재를 떠다니는 영혼의 역할을 부여하여 진행한 역할극이다.

과거의 방식으로 현재를 보는 것은 현재의 시각과는 상당한 거리가 있을 것이라는 가정하에

작가는 친숙한 현재로부터 떨어져있는 현존재 안의 영혼의 시각을 표현함으로써 인간이 과연 육체가 없이도 존재할 수 있는가에 대한 물음을 던진다

Sacrifice

공공의 선을 달성하기 위해 인간의 사적인 욕망은 희생되고, 공익을 위해 우리의 현실과 일상은 지배당하고 있다.

인간의 쾌락은 사회적 생산성을 위해 희생되고, 미래의 막연한 안위를 위하여 현재의 욕망을 져 버린다. 심지어 우리 인간들은 경제발전과 문명의 발달을 위해 자유의 욕망마저 포기하라는 사회적 요구를 받는다.

도덕적 선과 경제적 효용에 바탕을 둔 윤리는 다른 욕구, 소수가 가진 욕망의 가능성조차 인정하지 않고 도덕과 쓸모의 이름으로 지배질서에 순응할 것을 강요한다.

제단에 받쳐진 제물처럼, 인간이 만든 공간 속에 들어와 있는 사진 속 동물들은 문명을 위해 희생하며 살아가는 인간들의 모습을 대리하고 있다.

내가 보는 풍경과 사물이 형식적으로는 다른 이들의 그것과 다를 바 없지만, 그것들과의 소통과 교감을 통해 내 자신을 초자연적인 상태로 끌어 올림으로써 그것들에 생명의 깊이를 드러내게 할 것이다.
